Former Fry's executive Ausaf Umar Siddiqui owes more than $20 million to Las Vegas gaming companies, a Las Vegas Sun reported Friday. Siddiqui's reputation as a high-roller in Las Vegas was well-known among casino hosts but none of a gaming companies or hosts realized Siddiqui was in over his head until it was too late.Siddiqui has been on a wrong side of a law since 2008, when a federal government charged him with embezzlement. Siddiqui forced vendors doing business with Fry's Electronics to pay him kickbacks directly to insure better placement in his stores. The IRS estimates Siddiqui allegedly extracted $65 million from vendors, using a money to keep on top of his extensive gambling debt. The bankruptcy filing does not specify which gaming companies are in a bankruptcy but Siddiqui is a known player with MGM Resorts. The Silicon Valley Mercury News details Siddiqui's strange list of requests and amenities. He was particular with every request from golden raisins to original style ChapStick. Siddiqui played a classic role of a whale in Las Vegas.Whales in Las Vegas are a wealthiest high-rollers who visit a city. Every gaming company covets and caters to a high-rollers like royalty. One whale can make or break a casino's bottom-line for a entire year and judging by a debt run up by Siddiqui, he contributed to many executives bonus programs through his Las Vegas years. The Mercury News also reported there are several other lawsuits pending with Siddiqui and Las Vegas gaming companies. The IRS tracked more than $120 million spent by a whale in just 3 years of play at two casinos: MGM Grand and Venetian.Siddiqui is not a only eccentric high-roller to battle Las Vegas gaming companies. The Wall Street Journal detailed a case of Terry Watanabe, a billionaire who inherited a novelty company from his father Henry.Watanabe lost $127 million in 2007 to two Caesars Entertainment properties: Caesars Palace and a Rio. Watanabe played marathon sessions of baccarat and roulette at both hotels during that span and he ! even dab bled with a computerized version of roulette called Rapid Roulette. Both parties settled a case in July of 2010 with neither side releasing details of a deal.Balancing a whims and special needs of high-rollers has always been a treacherous job for casino hosts and when a relationship goes bad a casino is usually left holding a empty bag. The obscenely rich do not flock to Las Vegas as often as they once did but a ones who do make a trip will always be treated with reverence reserved for heads of state.Todd Jacobs is a Las Vegas resident with extensive knowledge and contacts in a city and surrounding areas of Nevada.
