Monday30 January 20122 a.m. A rundown of Las Vegas Valley business' charitable efforts:Employees of MGM Resorts International raised $4.6 million last year in support of more than 1,000 community-based nonprofit organizations in Nevada, Michigan and Mississippi, as well as other regional and national nonprofit organizations. The MGM Resorts Foundation, the companys employee-directed nonprofit entity, supports community charities by distributing individual donations designated by employees and by issuing grants to community nonprofits selected by its employee grants council. MGM Resorts covers all of the administrative costs required to raise and disburse the funds.Four Clark County School District librarians were honored in December as librarians of the week by SuperPawn employees, who reviewed nomination letters submitted by their peers. They will each receive the $1,000 cash award from SuperPawn to be used to enhance their school library, along with the piece of fine jewelry from National Jewelry Liquidation Center.The honorees are: Rebecca Hunt, C.T. Sewell Elementary School; Tiffany Swallia, Jessie D. Scott Elementary School; Michelle Zamora, Lois Craig Elementary School; and Sharon Thomas, Katz Elementary School.Communities In Schools of Nevada raised $5,000 at the Dec. 4 event at Stella McCartney inside Crystals at CityCenter. A portion of the days purchases were designated to helping the organization in its mission of serving at-risk children in Nevada.For the second year in the row, Panattoni Development Company donated an 11-week lease to the City Mission of Las Vegas, for use in storing and organizing non-perishable items for holiday food drives. The nonprofit delivered more than 700 boxes of food to local residents during the holidays.Celine Dion, Caesars Entertainment and AEG Live collaborated on Jan. 15 to produce Play Without Pain: Childrens Sickle Cell Benefit. The benefit raised $1 million to help to help fight sickle cell anemia. Th! e benefi t included the special presentation of Celine Dions current show at Caesars Palace and the reception at PURE Nightclub sponsored by Southern Wine & Spirits.Some 50 homeless youths became rock stars Dec. 10, when they were transformed by hair stylists and make-up artists, then photographed professionally, all by local professionals volunteering their time. The event was organized by HELP of Southern Nevada and held at the Shannon West Homeless Youth Center, and was part of Help-Portrait, the global movement of photographers using their time, equipment and expertise for charitable purposes.Professional rodeo competitor Trevor Brazile and the United States Marines teamed up with Western lifestyle manufacturer Pro Equine Group to benefit the Marine Toys For Tots Foundations charity during rodeos championship competition at National Finals Rodeo. Toys For Tots focuses on needy children during the holiday season.Feed The Children collaborated with Speedway Childrens Charities and Las Vegas Motor Speedway to deliver two truckloads of food and essentials to The Shade Tree on Dec. 13. An estimated 800 families received food and items designed to help the family of four for the week and was part of the nationwide effort by Feed The Children and Speedway Childrens Charities to help families in need.Golden Rainbow has received the $25,000 grant from MAC Cosmetics AIDS Fund. The funds will be used to support the HIV/AIDS nonprofit organizations Affordable Housing Program, which is designed for people living with HIV/AIDS in Southern Nevada who would otherwise be homeless.
