Facebook Inc. is planning to open its 1st San Francisco office — albeit a little one.The social-media company has a letter of intent for space at 181 Fremont, a new skyscraper in the South of Market district, reportedly a human being familiar with the matter. The building would be a test for fewer than 100 Instagram employees, asserted the person, who asked not to be named 'cause the details aren’t finalized.Facebook hasn’t signed a lease and it is still looking at other properties, the human being said.While Facebook is a behemoth around its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, it has yet to join Silicon Valley heavyweights such as Google and LinkedIn in having offices in San Francisco. Leasing space in the city would assist the company recruit employees who want to live in a more urban area without making the hour-long commute to the main campus, reportedly the human being with knowledge of the matter.The potential deal at 181 Fremont indicates a little foray for the company, which has about 18,800 workers, about half of which are based in Menlo Park. Most of Instagram’s employees will remain at the headquarters, the human being said.Facebook declined to comment. A spokeswoman for Jay Paul Co., the developer of 181 Fremont, did not immediately respond to a call looking for comment.
