The Vegas Golden Knights are within a few days of having a roster and beginning the 2017-18 National Hockey League crusade in earnest.The NHL will hold its expansion draft early next week, with the 30 existing teams submitting protected lists and the Golden Knights choosing from among the rest to construct their 1st roster.The protection lists must be submitted by Saturday at 5 p.m. ET, and the Knights will have three days to select one player from each of the 30 teams.Vegas’s selections will be formally announced June 21 during the NHL Awards show.The rules for protecting players are relatively straightforward, although there are a few twists to make sure the Golden Knights field a relatively competitive team. Existing teams can protect a strictly controlled set of 11 players (exactly seven forwards, three defencemen and one goalie) or a more flexible set of nine players (consisting of eight skaters and one goalie).The teams must abandon unprotected at least two forwards, one defenceman and one goalie who are under contract for next season and who played at least 40 games last season or 70 games over the last two seasons.
