NAIROBI, Kenya — Seven girls died early Sat. when a fire gutted their dormitory at a highschool in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, the country’s education minister stated.
The reason for the fire was unknown, Fred Matiangi stated. Moi Girls High School might be closed for 2 weeks to permit for investigations.
“At 2 a.m. our matron came telling us to get out of the hostel 'cause there was fire in one of many hostels,” student Warda Sadique told the Related Press. “So most people have been panicking, some have been jumping via the windows.”
Both Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta & opposition leader Raila Odinga quickly expressed their concern over the deaths. Both are returning to campaigning after Fri.’snullifying last month’s election & calling for a brand new vote within 60 days.
The fire brought back reminiscences of the deaths of 67 college students in a dormitory fire at a highschool in japanese Kenya in Mar. 2001. It after emerged the fire was brought on by college students apparently angered by the school’s administration.
Last yr, at the least 126 high schools skilled arson assaults in what appeared to be protests by college students over the shortening of holidays & limiting of visits by parents. Matiangi took these measures after widespread cheating in 2015 highschool final-year exams.
