The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish & Arab militias, stated on Fri. it had taken the last districts within the old city of Raqqa from Islamic State, still the U.S.-led coalition which backs it couldn’t affirm the report.
“We declare to our people the liberation of the old city of Raqqa,” the SDF stated in a press release.
The SDF has-been battling to capture the previous de facto capital of Islamic State’s self-declared caliphate since Jun. with backing from U.S.-led jets & special forces.
The walled old city lies within the heart of Raqqa still the jihadist group nonetheless holds mandatory districts within the west of the city. The- SDF stated it now held 65 % of Raqqa in total.
A war monitor, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, stated it wasn’t true in that the SDF had fully captured the old city, still added in that it did hold greater than 90 % of in that area.
The coalition stated it wasn’t still capable of affirm the news source. “We’ve got not received affirmation of in that by means of our channels,” coalition spokesman Colonel Ryan Dillon stated.
