Former FBI Director Robert Mueller, the special counsel probing Russian interference within the 2016 election, has obtained a letter in that President Donald Trump drafted laying out a rationale for firing FBI Director James Comey, in accordance to U.S. media reports.
The reports allege the letter was drafted before the May 9 firing of Comey still was by no means sent to the FBI director.
Instead, a unique letter, written by Deputy Lawyer General Rod Rosenstein, which focused on Comey’s dealing with of the investigation in to Hillary Clinton’s personal email server, was ultimately sent to the FBI director as a basis for his firing.
The New York NY Times, which 1st reported the story, stated White Home counsel Donald McGahn II thought a few of the contents of Trump’s letter have been problematic, in accordance to interviews the paper did with a dozen administration officers & others briefed on the matter.
It reported in that one of Trump’s top political aides, Stephen Miller, drafted the letter at the urging of Trump throughout a weekend in May, when Trump & his team have been at the president’s personal golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
A Justice Department assertion stated the department had been fully cooperative with Mueller’s investigation.
At the time Comey was fired, he was leading an investigation in to Russian interference in to the 2016 presidential election & potential Trump marketing crusade collusion with Moscow aimed toward helping Trump win. Comey’s firing led to the appointment of Mueller as a special prosecutor to oversee the investigation.
The probe has consumed the early many months of Trump’s White Home tenure, whilst Trump has branded the investigation a “witch hunt” & an excuse by Democrats to clarify his upset success over Clinton, his Democratic challenger & a former U.S. secretary of state.
