Whoopi Goldberg is opening up about her award-winning role in Ghost!
While chatting with Naomi Campbell, the 64-year-old EGOT winner revealed that she was originally told her persona was “too big” for the 1990 movie.
“’They don’t want you. They think that your persona is too big and will take people out of the movie,’” Whoopi recalled her agent telling her when she asked about auditioning for the movie.
Surprised, Whoopi responded, “Not that I’m comparing myself but Marlon Brando is big. They’re a big character.”
Whoopi then decided to move on, but got a call from her agent saying that star Patrick Swayze really wanted her in the movie with him!
“I was called up and told, ‘Remember that movie they didn’t want you for? They’ve hired Patrick Swayze, Patrick wanted to know why they hadn’t come to you,’” Whoopi explained. “‘They told him you would take people out of the movie.’”
Patrick had defended Whoopi‘s right to audition and said, “’I’m not saying yes to this piece until we know she’s not the right person because this is ridiculous. She’s perfect.’”
She recalled with a laugh, “I’d never met him but he was a fan!”
Whoopi and Patrick became fast friends when they met stayed close after wrapping production on Ghost.
Ghost was a huge success, and earned Whoopi an Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA award.
