LAS VEGAS — One of the newest names on the Las Vegas Strip has laid off staff and cut restaurant hours less than two months after opening Officials with the SLS Las Vegas casino-hotel didn’t provide a number of layoffs but said it accounted for less than 2 percent of its total workforce. SBE Group, the Los Angeles-based company that owns the hotel, said at the time the hotel opened Aug. 23 that it had hired for about 3,400 jobs. A statement from the company says the layoffs weren’t specific to any department at the 1,600-room property. SLS Las Vegas replaced the Sahara casino, shuttered in 2011. Rich Mbariket who designed the digital video advertisements for the casino-hotel’s nightclubs seen on the hotel’s marquee, was among those laid off. He posted the news to his personal blog Friday after refusing the company’s severance offer. Mbariket said he wasn’t bitter about his dismissal. “I just wasn’t expecting layoffs after six weeks of opening,” he said. The news didn’t worry observers. …

Now through the first quarter of their season, the Seattle Seahawks are still favored in Las Vegas to repeat their national championship and win Super Bowl XLIX. The Hawks are 3-1 through their first four of their 16-game season, tied with the Arizona Cardinals for the NFC West lead. No team remains undefeated; Seattle’s one loss came in Week 2 against the Chargers, when the Seahawks fell 30-21 in San Diego. Sports book Bovada on Wednesday said Seattle has 4-to-7 odds to win the NFC West and 9-to-5 odds to win the NFC championship game again this season. Bovada is expecting the Seahawks to match up at University of Phoenix Stadium with none other than the Denver Broncos, who have 7-to-4 odds of winning the AFC title. Once at the Big Game, Seattle has 4-to-1 odds of winning its second consecutive NFL championship, according to Bovada. The Broncos have 17-to-4 odds to win the Super Bowl. Three teams were next with 10-to-1 odds: the Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots and San Diego Chargers. …

Las Vegas Sands Corp (LVS – $62)While best known in the U.S. for its Venetian and Palazzo casino hotels in Las Vegas, the vast majority of the earnings of Las Vegas Sands (LVS) are generated in Macau (60% of EBITDA) and Singapore (30% of EBITDA). A weaker economy and the recent crackdown on corruption in China have pressured gambling volumes in Macau, especially in the portion of the business catering to VIP customers. The Macau gaming market is rather bifurcated between a large and more mature VIP business and a smaller, higher growth and higher margin mass-market business. Roughly 85% of LVS’s profits in Macau come from the more attractive mass-market segment. Furthermore, LVS is well positioned within that segment because it controls 56% of the casino-operated hotel rooms in the market, which gives it an edge in attracting high value customers. We view the recent slowdown in Macau as a temporary phenomenon that has given us the opportunity to own one of the best-positioned global gaming companies at a significant discount to our estimate of intrinsic value. Meanwhile, shareholders currently are benefiting from a dividend yield that is over 3% and an owner-operator management team that is buying back stock.
