West Virginia launches Statewide Paranormal Trail


Visit spooky sites and win prizes using digital passport

“Recent trends have shown us that travelers are increasingly interested in spooky and unique destinations,” said West Virginia Department of Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby. “West Virginia has quite a few spots with haunted histories, so we created the Paranormal Trail to tap into the thriving market for themed tours and attractions. Whether learning about local legends or touring notoriously haunted attractions, it appeals to travelers interested in spooky sightings, mystery, and local lore.”

To experience the haunts of West Virginia and uncover chilling tales, travelers can register to participate in The West Virginia Paranormal Trail online and instantly receive the digital passport via email or text. As exploration is underway, visitors check in to spooky spots around the state to earn points and unlock exclusive Paranormal Trail prizes – including an official sticker, beanie, and limited-edition print by West Virginia artist Liz Pavlovic.

In addition to the $1 million purse, the first-ever California Crown championship trophy designed by Chrome Hearts, was presented to the winning connections by Belinda Stronach alongside Cher and Chrome Heart’s Co-Founder Laurie Lynn Stark.

The one-of-a-kind Chrome Hearts trophy, standing nearly 20″ tall in solid Sterling Silver & finished in 22K gold, features the Chrome Hearts signature CH Pyramid Plus motif series and was designed and produced at the Chrome Hearts Factory in Hollywood, California. The three accompanying sterling silver carrots were presented to the championship team. The California Crown championship trophy will remain on display at Santa Anita Park year-round for visitors to view as a testament to the next generation of racing excellence.

With 21,812 racing fans in attendance, The California Crown was one of three branded stakes races. Cabo Spirit owned by Kretz Racing, trained by George Papaprodromou and ridden by jockey Abel Cedillo won the $750,000 California Crown John Henry Turf Championship (GII) presented by 1/ST BET. First Peace, owned by Rancho Temescal, Red Baron’s Barn, and Rodney Orr, trained by Mark Glatt and ridden by jockey Mike Smith won the $750,000 California Crown Eddie D. Stakes (GII) presented by FanDuel.

In a record-setting opening Saturday for the autumn meet at Santa Anita Park, over $23.5 million was wagered on the ten race card – an 83% increase in handle from 2023. For the first-time, 1/ST partnered with the Hong Kong Jockey Club on a separate pool wagering agreement. Wagering was available in Hong Kong on the final four races on The California Crown card totaling more than $5.5 million in wagers, adding to the $17.5 million in domestic wagers.

Guests enjoyed an exhilarating post-race set from headliner Gryffin, in addition to an A-list lineup of race day performances from Shaboozey, Elan Bia, Lil Yachty, Frank Walker, Zack Bia and more.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tejon Stages Topping Off Ceremony


New casino, hotel and entertainment complex set to open in late 2025

HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO TEJON, KERN COUNTY, Calif., Oct. 1, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — A “Topping Off” ceremony was held yesterday at the site of the new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tejon, which is scheduled to open in late 2025.

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tejon will be more than 700,000 square feet of which 150,000 square feet will be gaming space, featuring 3,000 of the most popular slots, 48 table games, and video poker and will be the second closest class III casino to Los Angeles, which is less than an hour away.  Multiple dining options, including a signature Hard Rock Cafe and fine dining restaurant Council Oak Steaks and Seafood, a Rock Shop, and much more will be included in phase one. Rounding out the second phase will boast a 400-room hotel, additional fine dining, pool, spa, cigar lounge and 2800 seat Hard Rock Live event venue that will draw attractions like concert performances, comedy acts and sporting events to name a few. In addition, Hard Rock’s signature memorabilia will be on display throughout the property. The anticipated completion date of phase one remains the end of 2025. Phase two is expected to be another 20 months and will complete the entire hotel and casino.

The project is expected to create approximately 2,000 construction-specific jobs and will be managed by the Penta Building Group, a southern California Company. Once both phases are completed, the project is expected to create approximately 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, both full-time and part-time.

In a symbolic ceremony, construction team members hoisted the final steel beam and secured it to the top of the structure, marking a significant milestone. The long-standing custom, attributed to the ancient Scandinavian ritual of placing a tree on the top of a newly completed building, celebrates the construction efforts and crews that are involved with the project.

The beam itself was transported to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tejon project for current team members to have the chance to sign it to share in the celebration. The onsite construction teams also had the opportunity to leave their signatures on the beam, as a proud representation of their individual efforts on the project.
