The Grand Canal and reviving tradition of Chinese culture

YANGZHOU, China, Sept. 4, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — A news report from chinadaily.com.cn:

A sharing meeting focusing on reviving Chinese traditional culture in a combination with the Grand Canal, was held in Yangzhou, a city known for its profound cultural deposits and abundant cultural sites along the Grand Canal on Friday.

Scholars, experts and online celebrities from both home and abroad have long-time immersed themselves in Chinese traditional culture and shared their understanding of the Grand Canal and exchanged views on the artistic creation of this waterway at the meeting.

Gu Feng, former head of the Yangzhou Cultural Heritage Bureau, said the Yangzhou section of the Grand Canal has played a pivotal role in grain transportation and agricultural irrigation in a long history since the Sui Dynasty (581-618).

He underscored that the Grand Canal has connected China’s major water systems and broken the boundaries of regional civilizations, creating conditions for the Great Reunification (Dayitong) and consolidating the country.

“The Grand Canal bears witness to history and serves as a source of artistic inspiration. Painting enables us to capture the beauty and legend of this waterway, and preserve its culture,” said Li Manyuan, a Chinese-style painter known online as Yuyuhetaotao.

“The Grand Canal is the precious heritage left by our ancestors. Blending traditional culture and canal chic with the millennium Grand Canal helps us inherit this heritage,” said Liu Jiaxi, another painter known online as Lumingshan.

Indonesian painter Dr HC MAS Hedi Suryatna said that only by maintaining cultural art reserves and promoting them through social media, can these reserves show tourism value for the world.

“The Grand Canal holds immense cultural significance. It’s a melting pot of traditions where diverse cultures converge and exchange ideas. I hope that its future will be just as rich as its past,” said Meerim Dzhunushalieva, a Kyrgyzstan student majoring in painting.

The meeting was part of Canal Chic: Reviving China’s Heritage Jiangsu tour, hosted by China Daily Website and supported by local cyberspace administration authorities in East China’s Jiangsu province.

Spanning 790 kilometers in Jiangsu, it links eight cities from south to north: Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Zhenjiang, Yangzhou, Huai’an, Suqian and Xuzhou. The section has also been appraised by experts with the richest cultural heritage.

“As the steward of a high barrier-to-entry, legacy asset, we are routinely approached about a sale. When Matt and David inquired, the correct considerations were given whereby we established a sense of cooperation that ultimately led to a much larger formal partnership. I released Breakwater to explore the terms of a transaction amongst their deep database of capable contacts and they delivered. South Street has the experience and capabilities to properly position the resort for another era.” Micajah Sturdivant, CEO of MMI Hospitality

“A generational asset can require a willingness to dig deep. MMI has been a great owner and operator of The King and Prince, but an investment held for nearly half a century usually takes time for fresh eyes to fully comprehend. We worked with the team on- and above-property to establish trust and model performance as an institutional partner appreciates. Our investment paid off such that these outstanding firms are now working together for the good of their investors, team members, guests and community.” Matt Brendle, Managing Partner with Breakwater

SE. China’s Quanzhou City sees boom cultural prosperity amid growing cultural confidence

BEIJING, Sept. 4, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — As one of the most renowned historical and cultural cities in China, Quanzhou City in southeast China’s Fujian Province, has seen a boom in cultural prosperity inspired by growing cultural confidence.

The cultural prosperity of the city was vividly recorded in many historical materials and “The Travels of Marco Polo“, which recounts the journey of the Italian explorer to the East.

Photo shows a villager pins a flowery headwear for a tourist at Xunpu Village of Quanzhou City, southeast China’s Fujian Province.

As China’s maritime trade center during the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties, Quanzhou saw agricultural civilization and maritime civilization fuse in here, creating a city landscape where Eastern and Western cultures coexisted harmoniously.

Nowadays, the city is home to one world heritage site and 44 key historical and cultural sites under national-level protection.

Besides, Quanzhou boasts six world-class intangible cultural heritage projects and 36 national-level intangible cultural heritage projects.

In 2021, UNESCO accepted “Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China” as a cultural property on its World Heritage List.

Since then, Quanzhou’s ancient charm has become widely known. In 2023, Quanzhou received a total of 86.5297 million domestic and foreign tourists with the total tourism income exceeding 100 billion yuan (about 14.06 billion U.S. dollars).

Though Quanzhou is obviously ancient, the city is also modern and energetic.

At present, Quanzhou boasts nine hundred-billion-level industrial clusters. As many as 115 listed companies at home and abroad and more than 1.52 million market business entities have settled in the city. In 2023, the city’s total economic aggregate output reached 1.22 trillion yuan, making it a famous “capital of brands” in China.

From a full-scale family house to a public pool, the artists present five immersive installations

SEOUL, South Korea, Sept. 4, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The Amorepacific Museum of Art is pleased to present Elmgreen & Dragset: Spaces.

The internationally acclaimed artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset have continually redefined exhibition-making and the ways in which art can be experienced. Presenting five distinct immersive installations—a full-scale family house, a public pool, a restaurant, an industrial kitchen, and an artist’s atelier—this exhibition marks their 30th year of collaboration and their most extensive presentation in Asia to date.

Michael Elmgreen (Copenhagen, Denmark; 1961-) and Ingar Dragset (Trondheim, Norway; 1969-) have worked together as an artist duo since 1995. While many of their early works directly engaged with the architecture of exhibition spaces, their practice has evolved to focus on large-scale, immersive installations that recreate familiar scenes from everyday life. By placing their artworks within these environments, they challenge conventional exhibition formats and excavate the underlying values embedded in the places and objects that shape our public and private lives. Renowned for their large-scale installations such as Prada Marfa (2005), Van Gogh’s Ear (2016), the duo was shortlisted for the Hugo Boss Prize, Guggenheim Museum, New York (2000) and won the Preis der Nationalgalerie, Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2002). They received special mention for their presentation The Collectors at the 53rd Venice Biennale and was selected for the London’s Fourth Plinth Commission in 2012.

Spaces, the first-ever survey of Elmgreen & Dragset’s spatial practice, presents five immersive space-specific installations that feature a combination of existing works and new works by the artists. The family house, titled Shadow House, extends the artist duo’s investigation on the idea of home by presenting an actual architectural entity. The public swimming pool, the leitmotif of Elmgreen & Dragset’s practice is a remark on disappearing communal civic spaces. The Cloud, the high-end restaurant may serve as a commentary on how the culinary experience are now consumed on both a sensorial and digital level. During regular opening hours, it will appear deserted except for a lifelike figure of a young woman seemingly in the middle of a FaceTime conversation. The industrial-style kitchen hints at the conversion between the kitchen and a laboratory, where molecular gastronomy gains popularity in fine dining business. The studio space shows the artists’ white-lacquered figural sculptures in various poses of creative art-making.

In the sequence of spaces, the visitors are invited to wander around and discover narrative threads to piece together their own version of the story that each space is relaying. Within the myriad web of details that hint at underlying narratives, Spaces will be a place to get lost in. The Amorepacific Museum of Art hopes that our visitors will discover a unique opportunity to uncover unexpected interpretations of everyday realities.
